The Merrywell Burger; Iconic Melbourne Burger
The World Loves Melbourne considers The Merrywell Burger (signature burger at The Merrywell in Crown) an iconic burger in Melbourne. This is a mother of a burger in the classic sense; thick juicy beef patty, crispy bacon, cheese, pickles, L.T.O. special sauce, ketchup, mustard and with large side of French fries. The patty is so thick you're hesitant to order a double; which we normally do.
The Merrywell has everything we love in a burger; juicy overdrive (we went through a stack of tissues), soft bun that still holds the burger together, quality pickles, perfectly cooked beef patty, the bacon is super crispy, and a winner is the sauces that provide super tang.
Burgers should be seasoned well and full of flavour, not just large chunks of meat, and The Merrywell is full of flavour.
The Merrywell is an expansive gastro-pub pioneered by globe-trotting American chefs, Grant MacPherson and Sam DeMarco. The Oz Burger is also a sensation here with pickled beetroot and runny egg in the burger.
Scottish-born, Las Vegas-based chef, Grant MacPherson and acclaimed American chef, Sam DeMarco (Sammy D), who is best known for making dishes that other chefs crave, are culinary innovators who are not afraid to break with tradition and are equally at home in the kitchen and behind the bar.
Their interest in local and seasonal produce borders on an obsession and they’ve trekked around the world in their pursuit of satisfying cravings and sharing their passion for hospitality. They’ve now cherry-picked Melbourne for their latest venture, their first time working together in Australia.
The Merrywell is one of the best places to catch up with people in Melbourne, with spacious venue along the Southbank precinct, with large windows looking out on to the river and passers by. Upstairs is a stunning terrace for your cocktail pleasure.
This is a place to take out of towners for burgers in an upmarket setting in Crown. Their burger and beer deals during happy hour are generous.
The Merrywell Burger leapt to fame from burger aficionado Burger adventure, who rated it the top Melbourne burger in 2012 and 2013. The Merrywell has publicised this with signage on their windows ever since. With respect to Burger Adventure, we also think it's a big deal that leading Australian food critic Larissa Dubecki featured The Oz Burger in her 10 Best Burgers in Australia in 2016! Surely that should be on their window!
Also, Burgers of Melbourne has featured The Merrywell burger with a high score on his "live ladder".
We also believe The Merrywell has done well without an Instagram account; a rarity in these times.
We are fans of other burgers here; such as KISS burger and the Oz Burger.
