Mrs D’Ebro’s High Tea at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto
The World Loves Melbourne was invited to indulge in the glamour of 1890s Melbourne at Mrs D’Ebro’s High Tea at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto. The tradition of High Tea began in the mid 1700s as an afternoon meal usually served between 3 and 4 o'clock. Initially, it was a meal for the working man, taken standing up or sitting on tall stools, thus 'high'.
Luckily for us modern folk, this afternoon meal became more known as an important event on the social calendars. And Melbourne loves its high teas! And this is one of the more refined high teas on offer in Melbourne right now.
A high society lady, Mrs D'Ebro was married to Charles D'Ebro, a London-born Melbourne based architect, son of a Spanish Baron and Chevalier who designed the Winfield Wing of the InterContinental. Mrs D'Ebro was renowned for the lavish afternoon teas she would serve in her house in Toorak. Don't we love this society stories of Melbourne?
Our high tea was served in Market Lane Bar, hidden away in an alcove inside the heritage-listed Winfield. Stepping into the bar beneath the glass atrium of the Rialto you feel like you’re being let in on one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets.
From delicate cucumber and cream cheese and dill finger sandwiches, to mouth watering red fruit macarons, Mrs D’Ebro’s High Tea is a modern interpretation of the types of flavours you would have tasted in the opulent surrounds of Mrs D'Ebro's parlour in the 1890s.
We enjoyed three-tiers of sweet and savoury treats perfectly paired with Perrier-Jouet Champagne. Such a delightful treat for a Friday afternoon.
High Tea is $65 per person, 2pm Wednesday through to Sunday.
