Punchbowl Canteen Packs A Culinary Punch
The World Loves Melbourne was invited along to a fabulous blogger event at Punchbowl Canteen. Tucked away in the industrial side streets of Port Melbourne, there is a steady stream of workers from nearby businesses during the week and a destination spot for locals who want to escape the busy hub on Bay Street.
This new café is quickly becoming a favourite spot for diners from all over Melbourne with their decadent brunches and lunches. Melbournians have an eye for an exceptional cafe, one that goes the extra mile for excellence.
What was once the old Salford Lads Clubs and in another era (we remember), the Red Tulip Easter Egg Factory on Fennel Street has now been transformed into an impressive space with high ceilings, expansive windows and splashes of brass. They commissioned acclaimed Australian designer Leah Bartholomew to paint the beautiful 10-foot mural which adorns the walls.
Head Chef Elizabeth Milroy who is originally from country Victoria has worked in restaurants across Europe before coming home and walking straight into the head chef position for three years at the acclaimed St. Ali, before working at Fitzrovia and Wide Open Road. what a pedigree! Now she focuses on food at Punchbowl Canteen which is simple, delicious food with an emphasis on accessible food and local produce.
Scotch eggs!
We tried some amazing dishes such as pumpkin doughnuts, fish cake scotch egg with radish, Earl Grey house tea smoked trout with black bean dressing and my favourite the baked semolina gnocchi with cauliflower, cheese and hazelnuts which was to die for.
Earl Grey house tea smoked trout - there's an air of sophistication about these brunch dishes.
Baked Semolina gnocchi a highlight.
The coffee is speciality and hails from Fitzroy roaster, Industry Beans. Cold drip with brewed coffee cubes and golden lattes are some of the other reasons you should get your caffeine fix here.
Punchbowl Canteen is open Monday to Friday from 7am until 4pm and weekends from 8am to 4pm. They are licensed and available for functions and catering. Get on it Melbourne.
