High Tea at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto moves to Alluvial

There is something about indulging in High Tea that heightens your senses as it epitomizes sophistication. From Saturday 21st January 2017, High Tea at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto will have a new home. (We can't wait). The World Loves Melbourne (Narani) was invited to the media launch.

The afternoon indulgence will be held at Alluvial Restaurant on the Flinders Lane Level. Moving to this location means that the offering will be enhanced with the addition of a Dessert Buffet, Chocolate Fountain and Lolly Bar which will serve as a sweet greeting as guests enter the restaurant and a welcome indulgence as guests graze from it throughout the afternoon. OMG - we love a chocolate fountain!

On arrival guests will be seated and served a glass of Perrier-Jouët Champagne and a delivered a high tea stand containing an array of items that include fresh scones, dainty finger sandwiches and beef Wellington pies. Starting anything with champagne, and high quality champagne, is always a great start!

The scones are a new edition by Head Chef Clinton Jackson who spent his childhood in a Queensland bakery and has adapted a much loved family recipe to suit a menu that befits the ‘glamour of the InterContinental life’.

Tea served throughout the afternoon is by TWG. From English Breakfast to Moroccan Mint and Silver Moon (green tea with grand berry and a vanilla bouquet) there is a wide selection that has proven to enthrall even the most experienced tea connoisseurs.

The whole offering is inspired by Mrs D’Ebro was a society lady who was married to Charles D’Ebro, a London-born Melbourne based architect. Son of a Spanish Baron and Chevalier, Charles designed the Winfield Wing of the hotel’s building. Mrs D’Ebro was renowned for the lavish afternoon teas she would serve in her house in Toorak. We're hearing more and more about this fascinating and stylish woman - and it's great to see her being honoured in this way.

The high tea, is a modern interpretation of the types of flavours you would have tasted in the opulent surrounds of Mrs D’Ebro’s parlour in the 1890s. To find out what she would have served, the hotel worked in conjunction with the Genealogical Society of Victoria to discover recipes of the era, types of Champagne they would have indulged in, and what types of literature they may have read – like The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde which, incidentally, was written at the same time that the building that now houses the InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto was built. This was before iPads and iPhones of course!

“Nestled between our two historic buildings, Alluvial Restaurant has a perfect vantage point to look up at the old buildings and imagine what life must have been like in 1890s.” says General Manager, Erik Stuebe.

For those that wish to indulge further there is an array of InterContinental Worldly Classics on offer at an additional charge. These are classic cocktails mixed using only the finest ingredients. From The Cobbler to Eastern Breeze these classic cocktails are not only available here at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto but at other participating InterContinental Hotels & Resorts across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. The World Loves Melbourne has been indulging in cocktails of yesteryear of late; they knew what they were doing with cocktails in the glamour days of the 1890s!
