Figo Cantina Launches in Elwood
Figo in Elwood has opened a cheerful cantina and The World Loves Melbourne (Paul) was invited along. The event signalled a celebration of the end of summer and what better way to celebrate than Italian cantina treats along with Aperol Spritz. A large grazing table was both stunning and a delicious way to show off the cantina fare. Metre long pizzas and antipasti always go down a treat!
A dear friend shared some wise council to me this week; Always write and cook from the heart, do not compromise on quality, and present simply. I feel this sums up Figos’ approach to sourcing, preparing and presenting their cicchetti.
Figo in Elwood has maintained its heritage as a destination artesian pizzeria while expanding and extending the offering to include a welcoming and relaxed authentic cantina experience with high quality aperitivi, cicchetti or tapas style dishes supported by a well considered wine list featuring the hard to source Pinot nero conte D’Atimis DOC: Friul. And to support the home front, a take-away deli selection of fresh and matured cheeses, specialty meats and various fresh produce for your convenience. (Image above bottom Figo Instagram).
Figo Cantina is a contemporary Italian hub just bursting with authentic pizza, tasty street food, artisan gelato and boutique wine and beers. Initiated by the masters behind LaSvolta (we remember well), the chefs at Figo tastefully cook and create through sourcing some of Italy’s most reputable producers. With a focus on ‘Salumi’ - delicious luxe goods and cold cuts as well as, ‘Formaggi’ – a flavoursome array of Italian cheeses, Figo has successfully pulled off a nifty blend of fancy fast food while still being completely authentic to their home country. Whether you’re walking in for a cheeky mid week aperitivo and some bar food with a friend, or maybe you’re after a full-blown Italian style meal, Figo Cantina offers a casual and playful dining experience that will have you coming back for seconds. And maybe thirds.
Welcoming, professional and engaging staff seamlessly get you on board all sorted with suggestions of cantina choices and interesting wines to match. (Image above bottom Figo Instagram).
Margarita Monday is an ideal way to kick the week of and draws a locals and regulars, and if you fell like takeaway, simply call.
When time allows, trips back to classic Northern Italian regions have created the opportunity to select and source product directly including, cheeses, tipo flours and speciality continental smallgoods.
The Fritto Misto of deep fried calamari, school prawns, whitebait was a fresh, full of flavour, crunch and texture; just order it with a beer or Riesling. Gold!
Followed up with a Vitello Tonnato of thinly sliced poached veal with tuna mayonnaise, baby capers & shaved parmigiano with a glass of Pinot nero conte D’Atimis DOC settled and sold me on their formula of let the quality do all of the work. Brilliant.
