At The Wine Corner Store, a hidden gem in Carlton North, the experience is a rare confluence of impeccable food, wine, and hospitality. Owner Steven “Stevie” Mifsud-Ellul, whose passion for wine and food is palpable, curates a journey that’s as much about discovery as it is about indulgence. There are over 300 wines available for your discovery. Rachel is a front-of-house dynamo whose warmth and professionalism make you feel instantly at home. We were perched inside for our exceptional dinner, but tables outside on Canning Street are also popular.

The night begins with a glass of Baumard Sparkling, a fitting prelude to a culinary adventure that moves seamlessly from the earthy richness of Bigilla, a Maltese broadbean dip with flatbread, to the delicate complexity of Crab Toast adorned with lemon aioli and pickled grapes. Each bite is thoughtfully paired, like the Martin and Anna Arndorfer Grüner Veltliner/Riesling that beautifully complements the vibrant flavors of Salmon and Beetroot with croutons, or the Fighting Gully Road 2022 Beechworth Chardonnay that sings alongside Jerusalem Artichokes dressed in Romesco. Why hadn't we popped in to this haven before? We noticed that the locals are all over it - a popular neighborhood watering hole.

Chef John Cassie has worked in top restaurants around Melbourne and truly shines. The Fettuccine with Duck and Radicchio Ragu is a masterclass in comfort, its richness balanced by the subtlety of the Moorilla 2022 Praxis Pinot Noir from Tasmania. The Seafood Moqueca, a hearty fish stew, brings the Chateau d’Aigueville Cotes Du Rhône to life, its robust flavors dancing on the palate. Even the humble Hot Chips with aioli are elevated to an art form here.

And then, the finale—a Salted Chocolate Mousse that’s as indulgent as it is sophisticated, perfectly paired with the refreshing La Trappe wheat beer.
