The Big Sick Movie Review - Hilarious and Heartwarming

The Big Sick is a must-see hilarious and heartwarming movie, releasing in cinemas on August 3 2017. See the trailer. The World Loves Melbourne was invited to a preview of the film at the Gold Class cinemas at The Jam Factory on Chapel St South Yarra. Seeing the film together in Gold Class as a couple was perfect and the film is so relatable to modern relationships.

TheBigSick 1

The Big Sick tells the true story of aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who gets together with grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan) after one of his stand-up sets. She's a lively fan at the comedy club and when they meet it's a case of awkwardness.

However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Pakistani parents. I thought this was a great social commentary as well as comedy; it makes you laugh but also there is complexity and layers in the characters, who are interesting and highly believable.

When Emily is struck by a mystery illness, Kumail must navigate the crisis with her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter), while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart. It's a real dilemma and you're not sure which way Kumail will go! I found the interplay between Kumail and Emily's parents fascinating, starting off in awkward fashion like the relationship between Kumail and Emily themselves.

From Judd Apatow the producer of Bridesmaid and Trainwreck, this movie has many universally relatable themes as is ultimately an awkward true story about life, love, and (crazy) family! I think the relatability would be across most relationships! In particular all the awkwardness that comes at the start of a relationship.

As we sat there watching the movie, it actually reminded Sam and I how we used to regularly visit a comedy club at the start of our relationship. It's such a fun thing to do! One of our friends was a top notch comedian. I always say that after a few drinks Sam found me to be funnier than the comedian (in my dreams).

We were reminded of other awkward and funny moments at the start of our relationship. Like the time we were on an overseas flight and I told Sam I just watched a long movie - but curiously noticed it was in French and wondered why it wasn't in English - of course she told me that I had it set on the wrong language channel. Or the time we were in a hotel room and I told the hotel staff I'd lost an expensive watch in the room and they could keep it when they found it (only to find it later in my luggage), which made Sam think I was cruel. Or like the time I met Sam for dinner at a 5 star hotel dressed in a smart new outfit from the local markets overseas - only to discover I was dressed in pyjamas, according to the waiter! So many awkward moments in our relationship - so we can fully relate.

Critics are raving about this film with an approval rating of 97% based on 150+ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes - it's definitely a "must see". We also gave the film a 5 out of 5 and felt the movie was captivating from start to finish full of comedy but also layers of drama.

Rolling Stone said “Not just the funniest rom-com in years, it’s one of 2017’s best films”. After seeing some of the great films of 2017 we can agree - this is a "cracker". #ad
