Embrace The Winter Chill And Enjoy The Outdoors All Year Round
Well, winter has finally hit Melbourne, and for many of us it means wrapping ourselves up in doonas and blankets and hibernating indoors. It’s always nice cosying up in front of an open fire or venturing out to enjoy some good hearty food to warm you from the inside out, but there are still plenty of ways to embrace the winter chill and still enjoy the great outdoors too.
Get Wrapped Up
Winter in Australia is a time where many hunker down and wrap up warm, but it’s also a great time to explore the outdoors too. If you dress in the right clothing, you can really make the most of the winter months in Melbourne, where there are fewer people on the streets, but still plenty to see and do. The streets of Melbourne are beautiful in the Winter but often we are rushing to seek refuge indoors, that we forget to stop and take in the beauty of this city.
For sport lovers, why not get into full swing of one of the biggest sporting events of the year and watch the AFL Grand Final (Aussie Rules Football). It might be a bit chilly outside, but you can always head to the pub for a nice warming meal afterwards.
This is also the perfect time of year to enjoy some skiing or snowboarding. Many Melbournians head to Mt Buller for stunning winter landscapes, great snow conditions and the perfect winter getaway, whether it’s for just a few days or longer. The 3 hour drive from Melbourne to Mt Buller can seem like a long way to go, but the time spent travelling is definitely rewarded once you arrive.
Closer To Home
For those looking to enjoy the great outdoors, without having to travel, there is still plenty to do in the city. Melbourne is home to many wonderful parks that are just as stunning and breath-taking in winter as they are in the height of the summer. Invest in a big winter coat and some warm walking shoes and take long walks in the parks. You’ll no doubt feel invigorated by the exercise and surprised at how much fun you’re having, even in winter.
You can also get rugged up and venture out after dark to enjoy the spectacular free annual fireworks display down at the Docklands. It’s an amazing event and the perfect excuse for a hot toddy or mulled wine to warm you up afterwards.
Although, there’s plenty happening in and around the city, you can stay even closer to home these days. As in, in your own backyard! Many people are making ‘staying in the new going out’ by creating an outdoor area that can be used all year round. This is a great way to extend the use of your garden and means that when winter draws in, you don’t have to automatically enter hibernation.
The best way to do this is by installing electric heaters that can transform a cold and inhospitable area into a warm and cosy place to sit and relax day and night. Teamed with plush soft furnishings and rugs for an extra cosy feel, you can still enjoy the outdoors, but without feeling the winter chill.
Just because the temperature drops, it doesn’t have to mean your activity levels do too. Winter is a fantastic time of year to get wrapped up and head outside. You might get a rosy glow to your face and a few pins and needles in your toes, but there are plenty of snug and warm places you can head to after an outdoor adventure that will melt the cold feeling away and make for a wonderful winter experience.
