Best Fish and Chips in Melbourne 2020
Fish and Chips! A tradition from England, we have adopted a passion for fish and chips in Melbourne. Here are our favourite fish and chips eateries listed below.
Tank Fish and Chippery - Lygon St and Emporium Melbourne
Fish and chips excellence but also amazing seafood dishes in general. Tank Fish and Chippery is passionate about sustainable fishing practices which is admirable. We've experienced both the Lygon St location as well as Emporium Melbourne (where we had massive Australian prawns and champagne).
Hunky Dory - Great Range Fish & Chips, Eastland and various
Hunky Dory hits the mark when it comes to fish and chips, and we often dine at their Eastland eatery. We find Hunky Dory fresh, a great range, and excellent value for money. Ahead of the curve when it comes to modern fish and chips and customer tastes and needs, Hunky Dory have introduced innovaqtive dishes such as "fishless" plant based fish and Healthy Hunky Bowls.
Fishless fish is a popular plant based hit.
Healthy Hunky Bowls another popular healthy option.
Even the basic fish and chips is on point and delivers. Golden crunchy fresh chips. Hunky Dory also impress with excellent service and the little touches such as salad, lemon and the seafood sauce, and serve the meals on decent plates. The Hunky Dory comes with a fillet of flake, potato cake, dim sim, chips, lemon and tartare but we often go larger with the Coupled Up option for two.
In terms of Eastland, Hunky Dory is a great option for families in a modern restaurant with affordable dishes. We've imbibed their platters and larger dishes, but you can also judge a place by its basic fish and chips. And Hunky Dory is a winner.
Tommy Ruff - Windsor & Mordialloc & Elsternwick
Tommy Ruff is the new age of fish and chips, serving up seafood with innovation and flair. But we judge it all on whether you can pull off a decent serving of fish and chips. And a golden satisfying serving of Fish and Chips is top notch with light crisp batter. They even provide more healthy options for the health conscious. You can have your fish grilled and get superfoods salad - changing mindsets!
How good is their seafood platter!
Craft beers and ciders and wines are the perfect complement. The meals are great value and cooked clean with no greasy fish and chips in sight! Images: Tommy Ruff Instagram.
Hooked Fish & Chips - Fresh healthy fish and chips, Fitzroy and various
Hooked pride themselves on healthier style fish and chips. Available for both dine in and take away, daily fish specials (e.g. certified-sustainable Blue Grenadier with rice and salad or chips and salad, Panko crumbed fish burger with chips, Grilled fish burrito with chips) are sourced from the market and cooked fresh to order, while the store’s famous hand cut fresh potato chips are faultless…a perfect mix of crunchy and fluffy.
Hooked’s menu also boasts three kinds of salad, including the scrumptious Hooked Salad, Sweet potato and Quinoa Salad, and Asian Slaw. With an emphasis on the finer details, all sauces are made in store, too.
Regulars at Hooked can mix things up, with Value Boxes, Burritos and Burgers and The Classics such as British Fish and Chips; sure to put a little extra wind in their sails.
Hooked is inspired by owner Ray Good’s childhood summers by the seaside in the UK, where his parents worked at his Uncle Johnnie Fish and Chip shop. But it was while travelling the world as an internationally recognised DJ that he realised the lack of fresh food offerings on the road, and the importance of healthy eating. Spotting a gap in the Australian market for healthy fish and chips, Ray launched Hooked, delivering the convenience and old-school taste of traditional British fish and chips with all the benefits of super fresh and healthy produce.
One of the best things to do in Melbourne is to check out the relaxed dining scene and enjoy some world class fresh fish and chips in a modern setting. Also check out our Best Cheap Eats Melbourne.
