Saint Lucia A Melbourne Restaurant Slice of Paradise
The World Loves Melbourne was invited to the newest restaurant in the exciting Windsor hub on Chapel Street, Saint Lucia. Combining a trio of flavours from the Caribbean, Cuba, and Gulf Coast of USA, Saint Lucia presents a balanced fusion of colourful, culinary dinner ethos with good old-fashioned hospitality.
With over thirty years combined hospitality experience, owners Stephanie Harris and Charlie Ranken are passionate about creating a warm, relaxed space without sacrificing great service. Displayed trinkets collected over the years showcase a treasure trove of travels and nostalgic experiences. “We wanted to share some of our favourite flavours from our travels as well as create a happy, welcoming, local space where people can get to know us and we get to know them.”
Headlining the starters, Saint Lucia has put a modern spin on the famous Cuban staples plantain chips, fried with paprika salt and Cuban corn on the cob. We also indulged in the lime and coconut kingfish ceviche, which is a real burst of fresh flavours straight from the region.
For those with a more serious appetite the house smoked caramelised beef brisket – smoked for 8 hours over hickory and mesquite – will tantalise your taste buds along with its house made BBQ sauce. Or alternatively, there is jerk salmon, which has been marinated in the house jerk sauce and served with a refreshing citrus salsa.
The stand out dish of the night was the ‘La Roche Flambe’, dark ginger cake, hot caramel and blood orange mousse. This spectacular dish was set alight by the waiter upon serving to add to the theatrical effect.
Of course no Caribbean inspired restaurant would be complete without rum and Saint Lucia’s carefully curated rum list rolls off the tongue like a collection of passport stamps. With rums from countries such as Saint Lucia, Cuba, Trinidad and Barbados you can take that Caribbean mini break you’ve been dreaming of without leaving Melbourne. Fusing the flavours of the beloved areas, which inspired Saint Lucia, the Orange Street cocktail is not tobe missed with its charred orange, spiced rum, Grand Marnier and cloves.
A slice of paradise in bustling Chapel Street, Saint Lucia’s tropical décor and enticing elixirs, combined with exotic sharing plates, instantly transports you to a lush Caribbean island where you’d be sipping rum in the sun.
