Best Cheese Places in Melbourne
Here are the best cheese places in Melbourne and our favourite cheese experiences in Melbourne -
Milk the Cow - St Kilda & Carlton
Milk the Cow is known about town as a cheese lovers Paradise stocking 150 cheeses from around the world (and always changing). Cheese specialists who present well and offer a large range of cheese options at affordable prices in an attractive casual setting.
Check out the Chessemonger's Choice Cheeseboards put together by cheese specialists, and the plates are flexible with choice of three, four or five cheeses. Plus boutique booze to boot. How do you possibly choose from such an array of world class cheese from the cabinet? We're glad Milk the Cow offers cheese lovers their brand on both sides of town - Carlton and St Kilda. You also find Milk the Cow is super popular at Melbourne festivals attracting long lines.
We have enjoyed several delights including Sweetened Baked Brie - soaked in Fernand Freres Cidre Brut with truffle honey, fig, almond, walnut and cardamom pistachio sugar. True artisans.
Maker & Monger - Prahran Market
Merricks Creek Winery - Mornington Peninsula
One of our favourite cheese experiences in Melbourne and Victoria is family owned and run Merricks Creek Winery. What goes well with cheese? Standout Pinot Noir of course. Merricks Creek only an hour from Melbourne on the glorious Mornington Peninsula has the X factor with close planted Pinot clones that produce an intense bodied Pinot Noir with elegance. Merricks Creek Winery boasts alluring platters of top notch cheese, simple and at affordable prices ($15 for a cheese platter).
One of our joys is to visit Merricks Creek Winery on a weekend and sit on the raised deck with a couple of cheese platters and Pinot Noir in a stunning vineyard setting. At the time of writing Merricks Creek featured Berry's Creek Tarwin Blue - mild and creamy - with muscatels on the vine (superb) as well as Soft and silky triple cream cows cheese from Fromagerie Guilloteau - with apple.
Of course Berry's Creek is from the Gippsland and the Tarwin Blue is a beautifully balanced cheese from these specialist cheesemakers Barry Charlton and parner Cheryl Hulls.
Fromagerie Guilloteau is a top French chessemaker and the combination of Merricks creek Pinot Noir made in the French style with this top French triple cream cheese is a match made in heaven. Worth a visit!
Richmond Hill Cafe & Larder - Richmond
Richmond Hill cafe and Larder has been a longstanding favourite of The World Loves Melbourne. The cheese room is world famous and we have been to several standout cheese events there plus indulged in casual tasting and shopping. Originally opened by food royalty Stephanie Alexander and Will Studd, this fromage haven has powered on for many years. As soon as you walk in to the cheese room there's an excitement of possibility.
You're sure to get yourself a wonderful cheese platter and you can access some top notch wines. This is a place where cheese, wine and conviviality comes together. This is the sort of place where you come for a taste and a sample and end up leaving with a cheese wheel. We visited the cheese room one time and walked out having brought all the supply of a cheese we loved. A Melbourne institution.
Cheese Cellar - Spring St Grocer
Spring St Grocer offers a world of foodie delights but come down the stairs to the acclaimed cheese cellar. This is another Melbourne hidden gem and typically Melbourne. Cheeses are aged on site and seasonal; we were able to nominate a cheese and enjoy it next door at City Wine Shop. The best of both worlds.
It's a retro world down here popular for bespoke events and masterclasses.
There appears to be a European emphasis (say a Coeur du Berry from Indre, France), but you can also source top Australian cheeses, for example a pecorino style Victorian Bourke Brandon.
Cheese Cellar of Spring St Grocer offers premium cheeses in inner city Melbourne.
