Feast for Freedom 2024 from ASRC
Feast for Freedom is more than a dinner party; it’s a celebration of the community coming together to stand with refugees and people seeking asylum and raise vital funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).
In its sixth year, 2024’s Feast for Freedom has been open for registrations from February 1st and hosts are encouraged to host their Feasts from March 18 to 24. Anyone can register to host their own Feast and stand in solidarity with refugees and people seeking asylum.
Participants learn to cook recipes gifted by refugees, and invite their family, friends or colleagues to enjoy the meal together – at home, school, in the workplace or a community group. Guests are invited to make a donation to the ASRC, an independent not-for-profit supporting and empowering people seeking asylum.
Funds raised will enable the ASRC to provide food, shelter, healthcare and other vital services to over 7,000 people seeking asylum every year.
In the past four years, over 3,500 people across Australia have hosted a Feast for Freedom raising over $1,600,000 for the cause.
How does it work? After registering at feastforfreedom.org.au, hosts will receive a free Host Kit with this year’s recipes gifted by refugee cooks, Harchana (Malaysia) and Reveka (Venezuela). They share their personal recipes and stories that will inspire a meal to help raise funds for the ASRC and people seeking asylum in need of support.
“The ASRC helped me when I first arrived, including helping me find a job at ASRC Catering. I started off as a kitchen hand. Now, after a promotion, I’m a cook team leader. Maybe in the future, I’m going to be a chef.
Cooking is my way of showing people love, so I joined Feast for Freedom to share my love with you. I hope you enjoy cooking my Malaysian menu for the people you love.”- Harchana
“When you’re a refugee, it’s because you want to be alive. It’s because you can’t go home because your life is at risk. Refugees carry a lot of stigma with themselves - including me. Many people who know me didn’t know I am a refugee until today as they read my story. I’m from Venezuela and I am really excited about being one of the people who represent Latin and Hispanic refugees in Australia.” - Reveka
Since 2001 the ASRC has been championing the rights of people seeking asylum and “mobilising a community of compassion”. Its network of staff and volunteers makes it Australia’s largest human rights organisation and provides well-being services and holistic programs to around 7,000 people seeking asylum every year.
A Feast for Freedom means coming together through food and standing with refugees and people seeking asylum in need of support.
