MCG Open Air Cinema Loves Melbourne

The hallowed MCG turf will be transformed from a playing surface to a viewing surface this summer, with the launch of a public open air cinema.

At Cinema at the ’G, presented by Bank of Melbourne, Melburnians can watch a movie on the giant scoreboard screens on 12 and 13 February  from the city’s most sought-after seat: the famous MCG turf. (Photo credit: Katy Mason).

Attendees can create their own picnic on the grass, bringing blankets, pillows and snacks, or enjoy a range of cinema fare from the MCG onsite caterers. Opening night will feature the sporting themed Million Dollar Arm, while on Saturday patrons will enjoy recently-released blockbuster The Martian.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Bank of Melbourne Neighbourhood Fund, which supports local charities and programs that deliver sustainable benefits to Victorian communities in need.

Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stephen Gough said the club, in partnership with Bank of Melbourne, was looking forward to opening up the ground for a very different summer spectator event.

“The MCG is a world-class venue when it comes to watching sport and events, but this is the first time in over a century that the spectators have themselves been on the playing surface for a cinema experience.”

“We are excited to offer people this unique opportunity to enjoy a great night out with family and friends in what is arguably the world’s most spectacular open air cinema, and encourage everyone to come along and be a part of it.”

Bank of Melbourne Chief Executive Scott Tanner said, "We're thrilled to give Victorians the chance to experience their favourite sporting arena in a whole new way. Cinema at the 'G celebrates Bank of Melbourne's partnership with the MCG. Proceeds from the event will go to local community organisations through our charitable foundation, the Bank of Melbourne Neighbourhood Fund. Melbourne is the world's most liveable city and this unique event is a new date to mark on our fantastic events calendar."

Tickets are limited to 2000 per session, and a limited number of VIP tickets sold out within minutes, so those interested in attending are encouraged to book early to secure their spot.
