Food, Things To Do, Inside Story
South Melbourne Night Market 2016 Loves Melbourne
South Melbourne Night Market is back, on every Thursday night for 10 weeks until March 10; and is one of our favourite events on the Melbourne calendar. The World Loves Melbourne attended a media launch and tour at the opening night of 2016 South Melbourne Night Market. Where else do you get a buzz like this on a Thursday night? Under the verandahs!
Surely South Melbourne Night Market is one of the best night markets around, even world class (and we've been to some of the best overseas). BMW Melbourne have got behind the premium South Melbourne Night Market as a major sponsor, and it's all systems go. Not only a food festival, there's much more including design, art, live music, pop up bars, food and fashion. We noticed many families at the South Melbourne Night Market, with something for everyone. For the kids, there's the PaintRight Kids Club with painting for the little ones while you sit back and relax.
From 5.30pm the stalls go up, andyou’ll be amazed at the local fashion and homewares on offer including Alska Design homewares, Koenji Vintage clothing , Tea Tonic tea, Heather Grafton art and bhunny + designs jewellery just to name a few.
Melbourne’s best food trucks are on hand including food trucks including Greek Street Food, Nem n Nem , Big Cook Little Cook , Crepes for Change , Miss Molly’s Cakes and The Snag Society plus so many more.
We started with drinks at SOME Space; in the middle of the market for a delightful beverage from a wide range of choices (with other pop up bars around the market).
The precinct along Cecil St is eclectic and electric; a great place to grab a table at one of the restaurants and enjoy the festive ambience of the South Melbourne Night Market.
Many of the restaurants are open and we are fans (including from previous visits); including Simply Spanish, Koy, as well as Paco y Lola and Claypots Evening Star on Cecil Street; and the newly refurbished Food Hall will also be open with Proper & Son, Ba Ba Spice & Roll and Fritz Gelato serving up their delicious fare. We imbibed the food and drinks from Simply Spanish and Koy a Turkish restaurant.
Then it was an enjoyable wander checking out the stalls along the street, and stopping to enjoy the sounds of the sensational live band La Rumba. Live music is a key attraction with several top live acts organised across the event.
Around the corner was the line up of food trucks; all doing a roaring trade. Again, there's something here for everyone.
A stop at the newly refurbished food hall and Proper & Son was delightful, again sampling a heap of food and drink including from nearby stalls. We had by now sampled a good deal of the excellent fare on offer from smoky paella to prawn burgers to sangria to devilled eggs and were becoming satiated.
A great innovation on opening night was a BMW Melbourne VIP area and bar where we enjoyed even more hospitality including Molly's Cakes (how good are those cup cakes!).
Thanks to Major Sponsor BMW Melbourne , there was a BMW on show to have a look at, plus a BMW motorbike and a Mini – all part of the BMW family.
Thanks to Chanelle and Katie from Porter Novelli, BMW Melbourne and South Melbourne Night Market for another superb night. We're thinking this is a must visit event in Melbourne.
